The Dudleyz Should Win WWE Gold, Not Sting

September 6, 2015 | Posted by Greg De Marco

Sting is in the main event of WWE Night of Champions, with fans salivating at the thought of Sting wearing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. 411Mania’s Greg DeMarco believes the Dudleys should be the veterans wearing WWE gold.

Sting was long the one WCW star who claimed he wouldn’t go to Vince McMahon’s WWE. While plenty of us didn’t believe it, there were plenty who did. Sting continued to prove himself right as he signed contract after contract with TNA Impact Wrestling, where he was inexplicably booked as a credible world title threat well into his 50s.

It was in November of 2014 that “the greatest wrestler not to perform in the WWE” finally made an in-ring appearance, disrupting The Authority’s plans in the Survivor Series main event.

This, of course, led to a WrestleMania 32 undercard showdown with Triple H, who shamed his prior WrestleMania entrances with a Terminator inspired crapfest. The only thing worse than Trips’ entrance?

His match against Sting.

Sting ultimately lost to Triple H (because WWE), in a match mired in interference by both the NWO and D-Generation X. There were reports that the WWE might not use Sting in the ring again, which is laughable now that he is main eventing the next pay-per-view, Night of Champions, in a world title match against Seth Rollins. Oh, one who’s set-up Sting justified by saying he respects…Triple H?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight…

This isn’t a Raw main event, people, 56-year-old Sting is main eventing a WWE pay-per-view…

…and far too many of you idiots are okay with it! There are literally tons of fans on Facebook and Twitter hoping that Sting wins the title, and it makes me sad. Sad to be a fan, and sad for you—the fan who feels that way. You’re lost, my friend. Very, very, lost.

Sting has no business being in anything that isn’t a 6-man tag team match at this point in his career. Seeing anyone try to sell his pitiful rendition of the Scorpion Death Lock over the past six years simply makes me sad, because it’s obvious that they are pretending to be in pain.

If “Stone Cold” Steve Austin thinks Stephen “Arrow” Amell’s SummerSlam performance exposed the wrestling business, he should really watch Sting “perform” in 2015. THAT is exposing the business.

On the flip side, you have “those damn Dudleys” returning to the WWE Raw for the first time in nearly a decade, as a team, the Monday night after SummerSlam. Much like Sting, their appearances have excited fans both in the crowd and online, and many are calling for them to wear the WWE Tag Team Championships.

And while those calling for Sting to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion are insane, those calling for Bubba Ray and Devon to win the tag straps are 100% right.

“Hypocrite!”

Think so? Well you’re wrong, and here’s why.

Age: Bubba Ray is currently 44 years old, and Devon is one year younger at 43. That puts their oldest member a full twelve years younger than Sting. TWELVE YEARS! Sting of twelve years ago could have been a believable world title contender, and even a credible world champion, for the WWE. Much like The Dudleys are today.

Condition: The Dudleys are both in great shape, better shape in their mid-40s than they were in their mid-30s. Unlike Sting, they don’t look old and broken down in the ring. Better still, their opponents don’t look silly selling their offense.

And quite possibly the most important reason why The Dudley Boys are a better option than Sting when it comes to wearing WWE gold:

It’s The Tag Team Championships!

We’re not talking about the WWE World Heavyweight Championship here, we’re talking about the giant pennies slapped onto a leather strap. The WWE World Tag Team Championships are far from the most important championships in the company, somewhere between the Intercontinental Championship and the Divas butterfly belt, far below the United States Championship and the Money In The Bank briefcase (but still way above being King Of The Ring!).

The tag team division is an undercard diversion, a place where you can find great acts like The New Day, The Prime Time Players, and the Lucha Dragons. It’s used to fill out a card, and does so quite nicely. It’s a division on the mend, and The Dudleys are just what the doctor ordered. They are 9-time WWE tag team champions, and 23-time tag team champions overall. They can lend credibility to anyone who ultimately beats them for the titles, because of the other two reasons listed above.

And most importantly, THEY CAN STILL WRESTLE.

If Sting wins the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (and obviously I don’t think he will), it’ll be a disgrace to the title, the WWE, and most importantly to Seth Rollins’ career.

And don’t tell me “A win over Sting does so much for Seth Rollins’ reign!” That’s horseshit and you know it. He’s not beating the man who went the distance with Ric Flair at the first Clash Of The Champions, wrestled classics with The Great Muta, and captured the imagination of wrestling fans by simply showing up in the rafters during Nitro. He’s beating a shell of a man, Terry Funk after his fourth retirement, an aged professional wrestler who has become a parody of himself because he doesn’t know when to quit—and no one has the balls to tell him.

The Dudleys winning the WWE Tag Team Championships is best for business, whereas Sting winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is not.

And if you disagree with the second half of that statement, you’re part of the problem.
