Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 5.25.16 – (Season 2, Episode 18) Enter the Mundo

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Joey Ryan defeated Mascarita Sagrada @ 3:14 via pin [*]
Gift of the Gods Title Match: Cage defeated Champion Chavo Guerrero @ 8:05 via pin to become the new champion [***¼]
Lucha Underground Trios Title Match: Jack Evans, PJ Black and Johnny Mundo defeated Champions Rey Mysterio Jr. Dragon Azteca Jr and Prince Puma @ 10:50 via pin to become the new champions [***¾]

– We get the usual video package to kick off the show.

– IT’S A MIRACLE… PENTAGON CAN WALK! He tries to tell Vamprio that he is ready to return to action, which leads to Vamprio doing some kung fu master shit on him to stop that. Pentagon claims that he is not afraid of anything; Vamprio tells him he can go to the temple and face the monster, but that he is not ready… yet.

Joey Ryan vs. Mascarita Sagrada: Famous B does the ring announcing for his man Mascarita Sagrada. Ryan attacked during the introduction; Sagrada made a quick comeback but Ryan then took control and hit on Brenda. Ryan failed to press slam Sagrada, Sagrada fought back and slammed Ryan down and then hit the moonsault for a near fall. Famous B distracted the ref, Sagrada kicked Ryan in the balls but Ryan did his dick of steel gimmick. Ryan then hit a tornado DDT for the win. I didn’t enjoy it or think it was all that good. It was mostly comedy, with the Famous B gimmick going nowhere right now. I just never got into it.

– We got a vide package for Taya, where she explained how sexy and strong she was as wore bra and panties. She then got into a dress and killed a bunch of luchadores. She’s the perfect woman. It then said that perfection had arrived, but, she’s been here for a while so…

– King Cuerno is in his huntsman hideaway, talking in his pimp cowboy hat about Mil Muertes thinking he was the king, but that he was the king of the jungle. Cuerno had Muertes UNDER GLASS (still in the coffin) as one of his trophies! King Cuerno is way better than all of us.

Gift of the Gods Title Match: Champion Chavo Guerrero vs. Cage: Cage controlled from the opening bell, and used his power to abuse Guerrero for the first two-minutes or so. Guerrero fought back, sending Cage to the floor and he connected with a suicide dive. Guerrero then caught Cage with a hangman’s DDT for a near fall. Guerrero tried to work the knee, and as Cage looked to make the comeback he missed a moonsault and Guerrero maintained control. Solid control by Guerrero here, Cage made the comeback with a great suplex. The sitout Alabama clam got a near fall for Cage. They actually started working very well as the match went on, it felt clunky in the first half, but it got a lot better and it went from bland as hell to pretty entertaining. They battled up top, Guerrero fought back and hit a sunset flip bomb. The frog splash connected, but Cage survived, so Guerrero went into the three amigos, but Cage cut him off and hit a powerbomb, another to the corner and the Steiner screwdriver to pick up the win and title. I went from really disliking that to really enjoying it. They worked themselves into a good and fun match; Cage winning was the right call as well.

– Post match, Cage called out Matanza for a Hossweight title match next week.

– Taya is with Jack Evans and PJ Black. Johnny Mundo has a surprise for them, he beat the shit out of Fenix and will be their new partner for tonight. They all air guitared in celebration.

– Cortez Castro finds Joey Ryan ruffling through Dario Cueto’s deck. Castro doesn’t think this is a good idea, but Ryan needs evidence. They find a shit load of cash on hand, and Ryan steals some. Mr. Cisco arrived and is pissed that they didn’t invite him. He says he is going to tell Dario, and Castro arrests him as Ryan pulls out his gun.

Lucha Underground Trios Title Match: Champions Rey Mysterio Jr. Dragon Azteca Jr and Prince Puma vs. Jack Evans, PJ Black and Johnny Mundo w/Taya: We got a fun and energetic opening stretch from Azteca and Evans, Evans is so much fun as the douchey heel, very entertaining. He also sells so well when it comes time to sell the bigger moves. The heels took over, locking Puma in the tree of WHOA, and each hitting various kicks and scoring a near fall. They continued the heat, working well together and utilizing quick tags to isolate Puma. Puma finally was able to cause some misdirection and got a hot tag to Rey; the crowd exploded for Rey, who worked with Mundo, and they still have great chemistry. The champions then hit a rapid fire series of moves on Mundo, and scored a near fall. Interesting that Rey didn’t work very long there. They kept a great pace, so quick, but at the same time allowing you to take in all of the action. Rey and Mundo worked to the floor, we got dives and craziness as the action just continued to escalate. Puma and Azteca do some great moves as a team. They worked in some excellent multi-man spots here, the faces made the comeback and Puma hit the 630, but Mundo pulled the ref to the floor. It broke down, Mundo kicked Rey in the balls and he and Taya double superkicked him. Super Rudo fouls and superkicks to Puma and Azteca, Black hit a brainbuster and Mundo hit the end of the world, but Puma survived! Puma was left alone, managed to counter the top rope German and tagged in Azteca and Taya then distracted the ref. Chair shot by Evans, and Mundo covered and they steal the titles. That was a ton of fun, and they did a great job of fitting in a ton of action. The shenanigans got to be a little too much for me, I can see others like it way more than I did, but I still felt that it was a very good match.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
This week’s effort resulted in a good show, with the two title changes and matches that felt important. The opener I could have completely done without. Next week we get Cage and Matanza for the title, and likely more on Castro and Ryan’s undercover antics. This was another fun hour of TV from Lucha Underground...

AND PENTAGON CAN WALK!
