Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 4.15.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

Lucha Underground 4.15.15 – Episode 23: Fire in the Cosmos

OFFICIAL RESULTS
~ Trios Title Tournament Match: Cage, King Cuerno and Texano vs. Johnny Mundo, Hernandez and Prince Puma @ 11:01 via pin [***½]
~ Cage defeated Son of Havoc and The MACK @ 5:55 via [***]
~ Final Match in The Best of Five Series: Drago defeated Aerostar @ 10:25 via pin to win the series [****]

* Opening video package.

* Dario Cueto talks with Aerostar on the roof about the finals of the best of five series tonight with Drago. Cueto reminded him that if he wins, everything in the temple has a price.

Trios Title Tournament Match: Cage, King Cuerno and Texano vs. Johnny Mundo, Hernandez and Prince Puma: They set this up last week, as Cuerno battled Puma with the teammates at ringside. It predictably broke down and gave us a preview for this week. There are lots of small stories between the participants, which I appreciate. This match was one of those “lots of moving parts” matches, and I mean that quite literally. The final few minutes featured dives by the babyfaces, and then everyone just running wild with rapid-fire offense. Everyone got to get stuff in; the pacing felt similar (but not as high octane) to a Dragon Gate six-man, and overall was just a ton of fun. It was everything you wanted out of the opener, including a hot crowd. Texano took out Mundo late with the bull rope, and he then nailed Puma; which led to Cuerno scoring the win for his team with a version of the Michinoku driver. That was really enjoyable, and of course Cuerno can likely lay claim to another title shot with the win over Puma.

* Shawn Daivari, who will be debuting soon, was in the crowd during this match.

* Moving on to the finals of the trios tournament to fight for the titles next week are:

~ Big Ryck, The MACK and Killshot
~ Son of Havoc, Angelico and Ivelisse
~ Cage, King Cuerno and Texano

* Post match Dario Cueto wanted a sneak peak of next week’s trios tournament finals, featuring one man from each team in a three-way match that will be next.

Son of Havoc vs. The Mack vs. Cage: This was another really fun match, giving a good sneak preview of next week’s trios finals. All three worked really well together, and mostly avoided the typical three-way formula of always having a man exit so two can work together. The finish saw Cage pull MACK to the floor, so Havoc missed the SSP. MACK was then tossed to the wall, and Cage hit Weapon X to score the win. This had a great pace, and through the first two segments, the trio of Cage, King Cuerno and Texano got pushed hard as serious threats to the trios titles.

* Dario Cueto talks with Drago in the bathroom, and Cueto says Drago has impressed him but that tonight is a huge opportunity. Cueto is such a spectacular asshole.

* Pentagon Jr. is in the ring, and makes Melissa Santos announce that his next sacrifice is to his master. He then attacks her and Vampiro looks to get involved, but Sexy Star makes the save to continue their issues.

* Dario Cueto does the ring announcing for the main event.

Final Match in The Best of Five Series: Aerostar vs. Drago: I am really happy to see these guys get the main event spot here. They have had a quality series, but I was afraid that it might get lost in the shuffle due to the trios tournament. I am glad to be wrong about that. Dario Cueto stayed out to watch the match and looked absolutely pleased that these men were trying to destroy each other for his “unique opportunity”. They did well playing off of previous encounters, with familiar moves and teases of pins along with a bit more aggression to show the importance of the match. They set up a table late and Aerostar hit a dive onto Drago, who was on the table, Cueto’s reaction to this was priceless. These guys worked well through out the series, and I felt delivered a great final chapter to the series. Drago wins with his wacky Dragon roll up, and then both men showed respect post match. Well done boys.

* Drago wins a unique opportunity from Dario Cueto. Cueto announces that Drago has won a title match against Prince Puma, but if he doesn’t win the title, he is banned from the temple… FOREVER!

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Very Good
The 411
After last week’s show, which I was not a fan of, Lucha Underground gets back on track with a very good effort tonight. They set the finals of the trios tournament, they gave us a tease of that match, the advanced the issues between Pentagon Jr and Sexy Star and then paid off the best of five series with a great final chapter. While I strongly feel that the evil authority figure is played out in wrestling, Dario Cueto is the one man that does it right; he’s the perfect asshole and I mean that in the most complimentary way. This was a great effort this week, and a super easy and fun hour to sit through.
