Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 2.03.16 – The Dark & The Mysterious (Season 2, Episode 2)

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Johnny Mundo defeated Killshot @ 4:30 via pin [**¾]
– The Mack defeated PJ Black @ 4:45 via pin [**½]
Handicap Match: Prince Puma and Pentagon Jr. defeated Trios Champions The Disciples of Death @ 7:35 via pin [***]

– After highlights of last season, we see Prince Puma working out and having flashbacks of losing his title to Mil Muertes. Pentagon arrives and thanks him for last week, and reveals that they will be partners tonight and that he will continue to break bones for his master. But after they take out the Disciples of Death tonight, Puma will be next. They then engage in a quick movie style fight scene. Puma did not speak, just stared at Pentagon at the end and growled at him a bit.

– Mil Muertes is on his throne, wearing a leather old school sling due to the attack of Pentagon Jr last week. Striker asks Vampiro if that was done on his orders, Vampiro takes that as an insult and deflects the question.

Johnny Mundo vs. Killshot: Mundo was a real standout for the promotion last season, and really came into his own as a rudo. Killshot really excelled in multi-man/tag matches. They worked a really nice back and forth match, really showcasing the athleticism of both guys, They did an excellent job of getting the crowd into it, including Killshot getting a great near fall off of a DDT in the corner and then the 450 splash. We got a ref bump (UGH), and then Mundo tossed Killshot up for almost a backdrop, but he tossed him straight up and when Killshot came down, Mundo mule kicked him straight in the balls. Mundo finished it off with the end of the world (starship pain). The low blow spot was excellently done, but I hated the ref bump, I see too much of that shit and LU usually stays away from that stuff. This was good for the time given.

– Mundo cut a post match promo on Mil Muertes, noting that he would come for the title, and then Brian Cage interrupted. Cage is playing big time face here, noting that he’s glad to be back and says he is the real challenger for Muertes, and promised to break the champion in half. Mundo said Cage wasn’t in his league, and Cage challenged him and came to the ring; Mundo bailed. Cage also reminded Mundo that the last time they fought he whooped his ass. Cage beat him back in season one. Mundo tried a sneak attack, but got sent packing. Nice work to start a feud, to use proper continuity and to keep everyone focused on the title.

– We see Marty the Moth, likely in his grandmother’s hose, where he is keeping Sexy Star prisoner. He’s wearing a sweater around his neck and looking like a lost Bravado brother. He told her that his sister said that it is almost time for Star to return to the temple and spread her wings, and she won’t be alone, because they are coming with her. Marty is a certified sociopath in the best way possible.

– We get a video package for “The Darewolf” PJ Black. Some bikers tried to attack him at a motel, and cue the movie fight scene! The Darewolf doesn’t want money or fame, he just wants the next thrill, and Lucha Underground is the place to get it.

The Mack vs. PJ Black: If you haven’t seen Willie Mack before, the dude is very athletic for his size and has good charisma. The Mack is not impressed by Mr. Black. Striker tries to get into my good graces with a Porkchop Cash reference, which I appreciate. They worked a nice quick pace to begin, with some good counters and keeping the crowd interested. It broke down into a striking battle, chops, kicks and forearms were used. Black hit a blue thunder driver for a near fall, and then hit a big springboard moonsault for another near fall. Black then headed up top, but Mack rolled away, causing Black to come back to the mat. Black connected with the corner attack, and then came off the top later and Mack caught him with a sloppy cutter/stunner for the win. The match was fine, but the finish came off poorly, Also, not sure it’s the right move to have Black lose in his debut match, especially considering that Mack didn’t have any sort of angle coming out of last season or momentum.

– Back in the streets, we see a new masked woman fighting. She is sexy and venomous. She is Kobra Moon, and debuts next week.

Handicap Match: Prince Puma and Pentagon vs. The Disciples of Death (Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte, Trece): From a storytelling standpoint, this makes perfect sense. Puma lost the title to Muertes, and Pentagon attacked Muertes last week; Catrina is now using her Disciples to try and take both men out. The Disciples attacked at the bell, and tried to use the numbers advantage, but Puma cleaned house and Pentagon then hit a dive onto the Disciples. Puma, not to be outdone, did a run up the ropes, shooting star press to the floor. They teased some dissention between Puma and Pentagon, and that allowed the Disciples to take control and work over Puma. Pentagon is content to allow Puma to take the punishment, and isn’t in a hurry to enter the ring to help. The Disciples then attacked Pentagon, and used the numbers game to maintain their control. The focus went back to Puma, commentary kept asking why they weren’t going for the pin, but the story was obvious, they wanted to inflict as much punishment to take the former champion out of commission. Pentagon then rushed in, he had enough and started to kick ass. It broke down with everyone in, and then Puma and Pentagon looked like they may brawl, but then the Disciples had recovered and started to work them over. Pentagon avoided a dive, which sent one Disciple into another as Puma hit a Michinoku driver. He headed up top and Pentagon tagged himself in as Puma hit the 630, and Pentagon stole the pin. The match was good, the best on thee show and told a good story to advance Pentagon and Puma. But this had two things I despise about wrestling; tag team partners that do not get along and the champions losing clean as a sheet in a handicap match.

– Puma and Pentagon brawled post match, and Pentagon hit the backstabber and went to break Puma’s arm. But Puma escaped and Pentagon bailed.

– We see new Dragon Azteca meditating as someone speaks to him about the power the mask has. The mysterious voice was to inherit the mask, but he chose a different path. The new Dragon Azteca has a path now, and the mystery man is then revealed to be REY MYSTERIO.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Average
The 411
Tonight’s effort was an above average and unspectacular show, certainly not bad, but a bit of a disappointment following last week’s show. The show ran into things that annoy many fans of North American pro wrestling, ref bumps, tag team partners that do not get along and champions losing clean in a handicap match. The wrestling was solid to good, but the show continues to excel on its storytelling and cinematics, which is what really carried the show this week. We got reacquainted with old faces, we met some new ones and we will have even more new people arriving (some as soon as next week). This was an enjoyable show, but it was not near the level of last week’s tremendous season two-debut episode.
