#8 - Wrestlemania VII | Blindfold Match

Sometimes you just have to wonder how we all watched the WWF in the 1980s and early 1990s with such reverence. Looking back with the jaded goggles of the internet, ridiculous gimmick matches like the Blindfold Match just have disaster written all over them.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts, one the WWF’s most popular personliaties was in the midst of a big feud with Rick “The Model” Martel. For those who don’t remember or werent’ aware, Martel had the typical arrogant heel character, who had such a degree of cockiness that he had a spray can of “arrogance” perfume with him at ringside, which would often help him win matches.

Well one particular spray of Arrogance got into the eyes of the Snake, and Roberts was then “blinded” on WWF TV. He even went as far as to wear wacky contact lenses to sell the fact that the Arrogance had somehow permanently affected his vision.

It all came down to a match at Wrestlemania 7 where both men would have to be blindfolded in the ring. To sell the match, both basically wandered around the ring for a few minutes with their arms just waving around like Scott Hall mocking The Giant. What a horrible idea for a match, and the execution was as bad as can be.

Tom Daniels on the Blindfold Match:
In the category of "stupidest gimmick matches ever." The plan was, since Rick Martel used his "Arrogance" spray to blind his opponents, then they'd both have to be blind. This god-awful few minutes of "action" mercifully ended when Jake felt Rick into a DDT... thus ending the agony of all watching.
