#3 - Wrestlemania XIII | Die Rocky Die Is In Full Swing

The Rock vs. Rikishi for the WWF Intercontinental Title. Doesn't sound that bad here in 2001. But in 1997, when that match did happen at WM13, it was pretty much the weakest WWF IC Title match in Wrestlemania histroy.

The Rock had yet to become the cocky, charisma-filled character we know today. No, he was still the corny, traditionally babyfaced Rocky Maivia, who acted a lot like Kurt Angle does today, but was expected to be cheered and adored. Instead the fans had bitterly turned on The Rock, chanting Die Rocky Die.

Rikishi was packaged as the "Sultan," a masked guy managed by the Iron Sheik and Bob Backlund. He, too, was despised by fans, and he was certainly not on the IC Title level.

The match itself wasn't disgusting, but it was pretty bad. There was no real heat and both didn't seem ready for the stage they were forced to perform on.

Luckily for both men that they were allowed to be reborn in new roles, or else this match could have been the death knolls for their respective careers.

Ron Gamble on Rocky Maivia vs. The Sultan, WM XIII
Rocky's Mania debut was not a good one, as people just wanted him to go
away. The most memorable part of this I-C Title defense was Rocky Johnson,
Rock's dad, coming to the ring to help his son against Sultan (Rikishi, for
those of you not around then), The Iron Shiek, and Bob Backlund, who did
little more than walk around with his chest puffed out, planning his run
for President.
