#10 - Wrestlemania XVI | Four Way Main Event Disaster

Financially, it was the biggest Wrestlemania in history. But what should've been a great overall event was marred by politics and senseless booking. In the fifteen Wrestlemania's before it, a heel had never walked away with the WWF Title, but that was about to change. Not that the idea itself was bad, because times do indeed change and the same formula doesn't last forever (See: Hogan, Hulk), but the execution of the plan was very much flawed.

Insiders and fans in general excepted the big event to be headlined by a Rock/Triple H match with the People's Champion going over and taking home the biggest prize in the business. Yet as the event drew closer, more than just that one famous eyebrow was raised, as the Big Show was inexplicably added to the match. Then Mick Foley, who was "retired" the month before in a match against Triple H, was brought in at zero hour to make the event complete.

Now, this could've still all worked out, had Rocky taken the title that was rightfully his, or if Foley had gone out as not just a winner, but as a champion. But what the fans wanted took a backseat to the "McMahon Show", as Vince manuevered his wife and children into the biggest match of the year, and basically centered it around them.

Why bring Mick Foley back only to have him job out to Helmsley for the third straight pay-per-view? Chalk that one up to backstage politics on the part of HHH. The Big Show? The only thing that could explain his participation was that there are four McMahons, and since they all HAD to be in the event, four wrestlers were needed. So two unncessary additions were made all for the purpose of getting the McMahon family over.

In the end, Vince himself turned on The Rock in an extremely weak finish that left a bitter taste in the mouths of many fans. The resulting feud between McMahon and The Rock was a failure, as it desperately tried to recapture the magic of the Austin/McMahon feud. For fifteen years, despite some pretty bad main events in terms of wrestling and/or storyline, Wrestlemania was always about the best man rising to the top of the company, and more importantly, allowing the top stars to shine. Sadly, Vince McMahon forgot about that legacy in his over-eagerness to get himself over. Hopefully this year, Vince will finally "Get it!".

Tom Daniels on the match:
In the most anti-climactic moment in WWF history, the WWF goes through an entire song-and-dance to wreck a very viable Rock/HHH main event, to place people in a four way dance. Mick Foley's dream, to win the title at Wrestlemania about to be realized. Then, Triple H Pedigrees, and pins him. Without Foley winning, the 4-way was just pointless filler to get us to the HHH/Rock main event.
