This feud began innocently enough, with Savage costing Warrior the title at Royal Rumble '91 due to Warrior's previous denial of a Savage title shot to be named later. The subsequent storytelling wasn't great in terms of intricacies, but it was AWESOME due to the intensity exhibited by both men. Before the big event, the stipulation of "Retirement Match" was added, taking away any doubt of what the finish would be.
Guaranteed ending or not, these two had a terrific match, something very rarely seen from the Warrior. Again, intensity played a major factor here, as both men would be damned if they were going to retire, so all the stops were pulled out. Savage hit FIVE of his elbow drops and that STILL wasn't enough, which took the breath out of everyone. Warrior proceeded to hit his patented offense of shoulderblocks, press slam, and splash...for a two count!?! Another break-taking moment and Warrior was lost. He even started heading to the back, until Savage gave chase. That was enough to get the Ultimate one riled up to hit a couple of spears and a shoulderblock to get the pin.
As great as that match was, it's the post-match activities that really make it stand out. Sherri Martel, now without a paycheck thanks to Macho Man's forced retirement, gets in to stomp away and curse at the beaten Savage. Miss Elizabeth, who was at ringside, rushes in and quickly disposes of Sherri, getting a major pop. This, of course, leads to the tearful Savage/Elizabeth reunion, and their "wedding" at SummerSlam later that year. This brought tears to a glass eye, and is definitely one of the greatest Wrestlemania moments of all time.
Tom Daniels on Warrior, Savage and Liz:
I remember hating Savage and Sherri so much... I couldn't wait for the Warrior to get him out of the federation. Of course, this was back when I believed that retirement matches meant you'd never see a person again. I remember this one so well because it was the re-uniting of Savage and Elizabeth. It was amazing how quickly they made the crowd forget about two years of heelishness with one quick reunion and hug.
