Best 411 Columnist: Chris Hyatte (And Another Thing)Chris Hyatte provides consistent yet rich coulumns with "And Another Thing".
What makes "And Another Thing" a standout among the masses is the great deal
of weight he brings behind his arguments. All in all,a rewarding read that
challenges our minds and reminds us of why professional wrestling continues
to intrigue us and why it always will.
Best 411 TV Recapper: Chris Hyatte (WWF Raw Mop Up, WCW Nitro Mop Up)
Chris Hyatte shows why he is the hot topic each and every week with "The Mop
Ups". Granted his controversial comments have brought both distain and
hatred, but what cannot be denied is the due admiration that comes from
Hyattes gutsiness and likeability towards those who venture into his world.
This is humor at its most raw and fresh.
Best 411 Webmaster: Ashish
Ashish Pabari welcomes our mornings along for the ride that professional
wrestling brings each day. His strenghts and discipline equals our grateful
praise for efficient and straightforward reporting with the familiarity that
comes from his trademark casual demeanor. It's like hanging out with a good
friend after breakfast.
Best 411 Forumer: Aquafina
From my brief time on the web board eariler this year as Supaman,I found
that Aquafina will gladly warm up towards those who desire
friendship, conversation, and a good laugh. He has shown to be a stronghold
amongst a sea of people looking for their spotlight on the internet.
Worst Wrestler Turn: Godfather Goes Right To Censor (WWF)
The Godfather has compromised both his emormous popularity and what is
considered as one of the greatest most rewarding gimmicks ever in
professional wrestling. The Right To Censor idea itself had it's good
intentions to showcase the Parents Television Counsels ludicrous claims and
atrocious actions, but now it's mearly an annoyance for those on both sides
of the conflict.
Best Catchphrase: It's True, It's True (Kurt Angle)
Kirt Angle has seemilgy created a sensation from a simple, yet precise
statement that has been transformed from common to unique. This ability
continues to stand true whenever Angle takes centerstage behind the camera
and microphone. There lies a genuine and often warm aura surrounding Kurt
Angle and despite the boos the fans are glad to have him in their lives each
and every week.
Biggest Backstage Baby: Goldberg
Before Bill Goldberg began to show an improved attitude towards the sport,
he has shown that the blessings that professional wrestling has bestowed
upon him were somewhat less that deserving. His rise to power has provided
him with opportunities both good and bad, and unfortunately the bad ones
have shined brighter, namely when he put his reputation as well as World
Championship Wrestlings on the line during his confrontation with Paul
Levesque aka Hunter Hearst Helmsley in a convention earlier this year. Let's
hope his current "streak" also means a streak of good will towards the sport
and it's members.
Hottest Wrestling Babe: Pamela Paulshock (WCW)
Pamela Paulshock has captivated many with her unique beauty and well toned
physique. Her hair is soft and rich, her eyes are penetrating to the soul,
and her smile will shine it's inner peace and joy like a star in the night
sky. She shows an interest what each performer has to say in in each
performers well being. Paulshock takes your heart and showers it with
emotions that remains long into the night where many dreams welcome her.
Most Annoying Wrestler: Road Dogg (WWF)
What makes Jesse James Armstrong an unfortunate target of annoyance is his
inability to take his potential into the next level. His strong lineage has
cried for its blood to spill but The Road Dogg has refused such a necessary
step. Such cries are heard by the wrestling fans and those in the business
that remembered what Armstrong really meant. Now and in the greater part of
2000, what was shown by Road Dogg was answered in return is our feelings of
dissapointment. Hopefully we will soon see the true strength that The Road
Dogg lies inside.
Most Embarrasing Moment of the Year: WCW doesn't know about Tuesday Nitro
WCW's embarassment was also felt by their fans and those who anticipated a
genuine comeback for a power that many felt would take the World Wrestling
Federation into the fields for another war. The fact that even those outside
of the company knew about the change in schedule was even more
heartbreaking. The tears that have been shed provided a deep drink towards
the seeds of distrust that were planted, and now more than certain, soon to
mature.
Most Dissapointing Wrestler of the Year: Big Show
Paul Wright is not one to be chained under substances, powers above his
authority, or physical impoverishment. He was given a push that many dreamed
of and the World Heavyweight Championship within reach. What The Big Show
really showcased was his slackened attitude towards training and the end
product of the spoils from overzealous visions of potential. Now with the
hardened training and discipline, perhaps we will see Wight rise above even
the most highest expectations.
Most Insane Wrestler of the Year: Vampiro
Ian Hodgkinson has fallen into the twisted world of The Dark Carnival and it
appears that it controls his mind as well as his actions. The Insane Clown
Posse have provided Vampiros with an alternative career and along with that
opportunity there has been a compromise as far as his wrestling career and
reputation is concerned. Many now hope to see Vampiro regain the freedom he
has lost, and whoever he now feels has taken that will not involve
themselves with such a superb talent in the ring.
Most Hyped News Story To End Up Being False: WWF To Buy WCW
The dream that has begun to emerge outside of a deep sleep has seeped back
within. That dream was that which has been on the minds of wrestling fans
ever since the WCW has become a force to war against the imposing WWF. Now
that interfederation matches and supercards are now an element of fantasy,
maybe now more precaution can be used whenever outrageous news comes to
light no matter how close it lurks towards reality.
Most Heated Feud: HHH vs. Mick Foley
What made HHH/Foley so intense was the fact that both combatants are so
different. Foley represents the everyman who's plight doesn't involve a
beautiful woman under your arm and a massive muscular build that brings
instant power and respect. The average Joe however does have the one thing
that drives him everyday and that is pride in who he is and what he does.
That also brings an intolerance for disrespect and a strength to fight at
those who stand on top of society's throne. HHH/Foley made you believe that
you can overcome the grand powers that shade their stinging shadow on your
very being.
Worst Feud: Kane vs. Chris Jericho
Kane/Jericho began from a simple accident. Jericho spilled coffee onto Kane
and not even before the steam left the liquid on the victims flesh, we have
ourselves a brand new feud. This was clearly an unimaginative plot device in
order to give these two talented men something to do. There was no setup, no
slow rise with all the nervousness and anticipation that accompanies it,
nothing. And nothing is what this particular chapter in the WWF received in
return.
Best Celebrity: Samuel L Jackson (WWF)
Samuel L Jackson plunged into the world of wrestling just as smoothly as he
plunged into the world of film. His new film "Shaft" was about to open and
the WWF asked him to become the Shaft character during a run-in which showed
a distraught Crash Holly plead the urban knight for assitance. Jackson did
just that and he played him just as effectively as he did behind a
Panavision Anamorphic Lense. The shot resulted in both Pat Patterson and
Gerald Brisco falling under the brute justice that only Shaft can dish out.
Worst Celebrity: Mancow
Often it takes alot of work to really screw up an apperance in professional
wrestling. That's due to not only fan perception which adds worth towards
the event, but also because this spectra allows all the outrageousness that
Hollywood and the general pop media embraces. Radio DJ Mancow however has
added perhaps too much value towards his character and it's affected his
image on camera. In wrestling it's bad enough when a wrestler won't sell
moves or won't show vulnerability, and when a guy like Mancow who doesn't
possess the attributes real athletes do and the respect that is only earned,
does the same thing, then it's pretty obvious that he doesn't belong
alongside those who fought and paid their dues to become a member of the
greatest althetes and performers in the world.
Best Game: WWF No Mercy (N64)
When THQ joined with Aki of Japan in untilizing their 3-D Computer Graphics
Maya engine once again for a wrestling game many expected another decent
title. But what the WWF had in mind was something more. They took the
previous foundation and transformed it into a vast and wondrous realm where
one can create their own wrestler, pay-per-view supercard, and participate
in a multitude of matches and scenarios. WWF No Mercy takes the revolution
to it's outer limits and what has resulted is the grandest professional
wrestling title in decades.
Wrestler Most Likely To Be A Nobody By The End Of 2001: Rikishi
The road for Rikishi Phatu has been turbulent yet consitent. The title of
"Nobody" is quite harsh and it will take precise booking and a gradual
seeping of not only winnings but popularity. Unfortunately, that is where
Rikishi is already heading late into 2000. His lukewarm feud with top star
Stone Cold Steve Austin has proven to be a bad sign for the potential for
future opportunities and if nothing is done quickly then his status will
descent into the silent depths that all fear and struggle to avoid.
Wrestler Most Likely To Be A Somebody By The End Of 2001: Mike Sanders
"Above Average" is just where Mike Sanders likens to himself upon entering
WCW earlier this year. He may still use that nickname but it's quite
apparent that is potential will take him into heights way above average. His
quick wit, stealth like wrestling abilites, and fresh faced cockiness is not
only the perfect leader of The Natural Born Thrillers but a personification
of the group and WCW in 2000 onward.
Who'd A Thunk It: Arquette's WCW Title Reign
Comedian and overall likeable goofball David Arquette had a certain status
and expectation upon emerging into the world of professional wrestling. His
presence was likened to that of an annoying little brother who marked out
for the wrestlers so much you hoped for a stray chairshot to land on both
your heads. Alternatively,Vince Russo had a radically extreme idea to put
the strap on Arquette in order to get that quick fix, that immediate surge
in interest and ratings. The result? Confusion and a genuine distrust in
Russo. The title reign did provide some laughs when Arquette cut promos as a
heel, but overall it wasn't a huge benefit and an even less longstanding
trophy for professional wrestling in 2000 and the years to come.
Best Swerve: Vince Russo Swerves Hogan At The Bash At The Beach
Bash at the Beach could've been one Bash at the Bitch for one Hulk Hogan,
had he not left the arena that night. Vince Russo dealt Hogan an unexpected
and cruel hand that night and it was certain that Russo dealt with the
frustration of having an established star that wouldn't flow with
expectations. Hogan was humiliated and stripped of his worth in front of
millions of fans watching and those reading about it during the following
days. Nobody saw it coming and it still leaves heads shaking to this day.
Favorite Show To Preempt A Wrestling Show: Nuremburg (WCW)
Nuremburg which recently obtained well deserved multiple Golden Globes is a
powerful and heartbreaking account of the Nazi war crimes trial of 1946. In
the aftermath of the "Last Great War" World War II, knowledge of humanities
greatest nightmare, the Holocaust, spread almost as fast as the chills
running through those who read or saw such events. The mini-series greatest
impact sprang when Director Yves Simoneau ultilized real footage of the
Holocaust resulting in a glimpse into hell that left many shaking in tears
and vowing for vengence for the 12 monsters on trial. Yes, professional
wrestling took a backseat that warm evening on July 17, but what grabbed our
attention was that of far greater value and hopefully lessons to be learned.
Overrated Wrestler: The Undertaker
Mark Calloway may be a seasoned veteran of the mat but his true value in
2000 is constantly glossed by contemporary rock, North/East Texas outfits
and differing accents that leaves many wondering just where he'll end up
next. This isn't apparent and isn't known by casual fans by his flashy
entrances and constant headlining at the top of the nights card. Calloway
has shown a great deal of strength and charisma but it only shows in
extrenuous situations like the Hell in the Cell, and not every time he steps
in the ring like the days of old. If he can summon such authority
constantly, only then his substance match that of apperance.
The 411 Wrestling Lifetime Achivement Award: Ric Flair
"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair becomes so larger than life that he not only
occupies the top of the mountain but becomes the mountain itself. His years
have not slowed him down and his influence continues to grow and heighten,
as evidenced by imitatiors between the ropes and emulators outside. What
other catchphrase has become so universal that whenever someone chops
another, a cry of "Whooo!" is heard in arenas worldwide? Ric Flair is the
true master and icon of professional wrestling and one whos name will live
forever.
